INDIA, Post-Gupta (Gujarat). Gurjuras of Gujarat. Circa 7th century AD. Drachm (Silver, 13 mm, 1.83 g, 3 h). Boar's head, the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu, to left. Rev. Bird flying to left; around, legend in Brahmi. Mitchiner -. Pieper 3760. Extremely rare, only two examples were known to Pieper. The obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

This coin depicts the Varaha ('boar' in Nagari) on the obverse, which is one of the ten principal incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Varaha, depicted here with a human body and a boar's head, saved the earth in the legendary battle between the gods and demons over the nectar of immortality by lifting it out of the cosmic ocean.
